Aquatic Classes: Often times our joints won’t allow us to do the high impact classes held in an aerobics room. That is why here at the Quincy Family YMCA we offer both land and water classes to allow for a more gentle workout. Please check the aquatics schedule located online or the YMCA, for times. Active Older Adult Water Exercise - This class is especially designed for mature adults. An extra 15 minutes allows more stretching and joint work. The goal of this class is to keep seniors ages 60 and up moving! Fee: $76 for program participants, free for Y members. registration period :: back to top Adult Masters Program - A new program started last session is for those 18 years of age and older who want a coached workout, not swim lessons. There is an on-deck coach to lead the practices and provide group and individual instructions for stroke improvements. Structured workouts will prepare you for a competition or help you maintain a high level of fitness. Participants must be able to swim continuously for at least 100 meters. This class is free for members and $30 for non-members and is held on Saturdays from 9:00- 10:00 a.m. Fee: $76 for program participants, free for Y members. registration period :: back to top Adult Stroke Development - This class is geared towards adults who wish to learn to swim more efficiently and for longer distances. This is a great class to help perfect those skills to begin training for a competition or just a great workout. Fee: $30 for Y members, $50 for non-members registration period :: back to top Aqua Aerobics - A high intensity, low impact workout. This class allows you to stay cool while you improve your strength, muscle tone, flexibility and cardiovascular system. You can work at your own pace to get a total body workout. Fee: $76 for program participants, free for Y members. registration period :: back to top Aqua Jog - A fun class conducted in the deep end. This class has all the cardiovascular and stretching you need. A flotation belt is worn that is made especially for this class. Participants must be comfortable in the deep water. Morning and evening classes are available. Fee: $76 for program participants, free for Y members. registration period :: back to top Arthritis - This class is dedicated to people with arthritis and is held at the Illinois Veteran’s Home where the pool is kept at a warmer temperature to maximize the class effects for those with arthritis. A nationally certified arthritis/YMCA instructor leads the class in specially designed activities that help improve joint flexibility and muscle strength. Classes are on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This class is limited to 35 participants. This class is held at the Illinois Veteran's Home on North 24th Street. This class allows you to become more comfortable in water at any age. Progress at your own rate. Swim skills are required for this class. Fee: $76 for program participants, free for Y members. registration period :: back to top Hydrotone - A high energy water exercise class that will tone your muscles, increase your cardiovascular endurance and improve your attitude towards exercise. The water allows you to increase your flexibility and improve your cardiovascular fitness without any impact to your joints. Fee: $76 for program participants, free for Y members. registration period :: back to top Stretch and Flex - An hour long class led by a certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor. This class is similar to “Active Older Adults” but geared towards those who have arthritis and benefit from a longer warm-up and cool-down than other water fitness classes. This class is considered a “Plus” class by the Arthritis Foundation standards. Fee: $76 for program participants, free for Y members. registration period :: back to top T.O.W. (Terrified of Water) - Adult Beginner - This class is meant for adults who wish to attend water fitness classes or swim laps for fitness, but have little to no swimming ability. Adults who are frightened of water or simply have no experience with swimming are encouraged to participate. An instructor will teach basic water safety, buoyancy and movement in the water. Participants will be taught progressive skills based on their individual ability. This class has a ratio of 4 students to every teacher.
